Dynamically Speaking |
So it is the New Year and you have a list of things you’d really like to accomplish. And now that it is the first two weeks into the New Year, how well are you in following through? By now most New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the way side. Why is that?
Well, there are several reasons to be sure, but one is that many of the things on the list do not actually support your core beliefs. For instance, weight loss. Now that is a very common New Year’s goal. How many times has that been on your list? With the conscious mind you decide how many pounds you’d like to lose, you understand all the good health benefits in losing that excess weight, and you even know that you will feel much better. But alas, by the end of January you no longer set foot in the gym, fast food lunches are back on the menu, and you reach for the fat clothes in your closet. Sound all too familiar? What went wrong?
Well, let’s look at what may have been going on in the subconscious mind when you made that New Year’s resolution to lose weight. If the subconscious mind has been using fat as a means of emotional or physical protection, then it will view your goal to lose weight as a threat toward your safety. So of course it will look for every opportunity to sabotage your efforts. This is why you can know the right things to do but just can’t seem to consistently follow through. It has nothing to do with will-power or motivation on this level but everything to do with the subconscious belief that is driving your behaviors. And at the end of the day, the subconscious belief will always win.
So what’s a person to do? Well, this is where hypnosis may be very helpful. Hypnosis works on the subconscious level. Here we can speak the language of the mind, find out what the beliefs are, and work to negotiate a more positive way to get your needs met. Once the belief is shifted to one that now views weight loss as a positive thing, we can then use suggestion to empower and support more healthy ways of living. This same process is true for any area of your life whether it be relationships, finances, career success, sports achievements, negative emotions or addictions.
Another great resource for lining up your New Year’s goals with your positive beliefs is to take some time to reflect on what kind of activities, places, people, jobs and situations in the past have really brought a sense of satisfaction and joy. Notice the common theme that runs through your life that you always seem to connect with. For instance, in my own life it seems I always manage to get into some kind of teaching or leadership role no matter what I am involved in. As an example, when our son was in Little League, we went to the orientation meeting for parents and left as the coaches. I joined a women’s group and became the small group leader. From that group I later transitioned into the leader of the entire organization. My role as a nurse has always included teaching. I worked for four years as a Kindergarten Aide and one of my primary roles was in tutoring.
Teaching just seems to follow me wherever I go. I love it and receive much satisfaction in sharing with others. The interesting thing is that the particulars may change but the theme remains constant. I can teach in many different settings and still find that activity to be satisfying and meaningful. It is much easier to follow through with goals and resolutions that line up with the theme. So how can you find your life theme?
I suggest reading a great book called “Sleeping with Bread: Holding What Gives You Life” by Dennis Linn, Sheila Fabricant Linn, and Matthew Linn. It will walk you through an easy process to help you discover what the theme of your life is and how to live your life more fully. As you set your goals in alignment with your life theme and belief set you will be more successful in following through to accomplish your goals. Wishing you the best year yet!
