Dynamically Speaking |
Have you ever wondered why you are feeling sad when everything in your life seems to be going great? Has it been hard to shake that depressed and gloomy feeling? Does it sometimes seem as if the panic button has been pressed and you experience a panic attack out of no where? Where do these negative emotions come from? Better yet, how do we get rid of them?
Traditionally, in the fields of medicine and psychology we have looked at ongoing negative emotions like depression and anxiety, as coming from a biological imbalance in the brain. Certainly this can be true, but is this always the case? For instance, when someone has had to deal with several traumatic events in a short period of time, like losing a job, a death in the family, and changing health status, is their depression or anxiety actually caused by a biological change in the brain or has perception of their stressful and sad situation caused the change in emotion and feeling? Hum? Why would this be important to consider? Well, it gives us the direction of offering more appropriate and effective care when we focus on the real cause of the negative emotion.
What we know today is that every thought an individual has will have an effect on the body’s physiology. Think about it for a moment. When you become worried because your child has not called home and you were expecting them a few hours ago, what kind of thoughts run through your mind? Most parents are thinking about what terrible thing must have happened. And then what kind of feelings do you experience? Perhaps you felt a knot in your stomach, shortness of breath, or palpitations in your chest. All over thoughts about something you have just imagined. So, were the negative feelings caused by a biological imbalance or did the negative thoughts and perceptions cause the negative feelings?
So, we have seen a direct relationship between entertaining negative thoughts such as believing we are helpless, vulnerable, not good enough, not safe, etc., that actually activate chemicals in the brain and body to produce those negative feelings. With this understanding you now know where to focus treatment, interventions, and resources. But because we are mind-body-spirit beings it’s not so simple to just focus on one isolated aspect of the problem. We seem to get much better results when we use a holistic approach which includes physical, emotional, spiritual and energetic aspects.
Hypnosis has been used very successfully to help people emotionally to change negative beliefs and perceptions. It is considered a rapid therapy especially when compared to other modalities. Hypnosis allows us to by-pass the critical factor of the brain enabling us to access the origin of the negative emotion more easily. Then new resources, new perceptions and new beliefs can be created that better serve the individual today.
To adequately address any physical imbalances I often suggest utilizing the services of a naturopathic physician (ND) in addition to an allopathic physician (MD). An ND takes a more holistic approach to treating the body and seeks to support the body in a way that it can come back into balance more easily. Their treatment choices may include homeopathic preparations, herbs, supplements, diet consultation, light therapy, as well as prescribing botanical medications. I have asked Dr. Kate Wiggin (ND) to share an article on Vitamin D as an example of how vitamin D deficiency can cause physical and emotional problems. (Seemed fitting as research has shown those of us in the beautiful Pacific Northwest are some of the most vitamin D deficient in the world!)

Cognitive Hypnotherapy for Depression: An Empircal Investigation
Researchers: Assen Alladin and Alisha Alibhi, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta,Canada
Abstract: "To investigate the effectiveness of cognitive hypnotherapy (CH), hypnosis combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), on depression. 84 depressives were randomly assigned to 16 weeks of treatment of either CH or CBT alone. At the end of treatment, patients from both groups significantly improved compared to baseline scores. However, the CH group produced significantly larger changes in Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Hopelessness Scale....Effect was maintained at 6 month and 12 month follow-ups."
