Dynamically Speaking

Ever wonder what a thin person thinks about during the day? How is it that thin people seem to be able to walk away from the table with food still left on their plate? Ever notice how naturally thin people seem to be able to eat frequently throughout the day and never gain an ounce? Just doesn’t seem fair to the rest of us, does it! Well, there are some very good reasons thin people remain thin, and it begins with their thinking. So what are some of the differences between thin thinking and fat thinking?

First of all, people who engage in thin thinking see food and eating as a means to live. Thin thinking people engage in life with food simply being the fuel they need to do the things they love. Now don’t get me wrong. Thin people who employ thin thinking strategies love the taste of the food they eat. They are just more selective in choosing better quality food which is rich in nutrients and more natural and fresh. Naturally thin people also think differently about when and how much they eat as they have learned to listen to their body to know what they need in that moment of time. Thin thinking reviews many options for adequately meeting life’s challenges as its focus is on living to the fullest.

In contrast, people who engage in fat thinking live to eat. Life is consumed with thoughts about food. When a person engages in fat thinking, it is all about quantity with little regard to quality. Fat thinking strategies use eating more as the goal, but unfortunately don’t know how much more is actually enough. People who use fat thinking adjust their meals by the clock instead of their appetite and often portions are measured in a large one-size-fits-all serving. Fat thinking looks to the refrigerator for the answers to life’s challenges and leaves the person disappointed time and again.

Notice in the chart below which kind of thoughts you tend to think:

Thin Thinking Thoughts Fat Thinking Thoughts
I fell a little hungry. I think I will have half an apple. It's noon. I must be hungry so I will have lunch now.
Wow, this salmon is delicious. Each bite is moist and flavorful. Did I really eat the whole bag of chips while I watched TV?
At a restaurant - I am satisfied. Would you please box up the rest so I can take it home please? At a restaurant - I'm full, but this is so good and I paid good money for it, so I'm going to finish it
I'm done with breakfast and am now going out to play. Just finished breakfast. Now, what should I have for lunch? Think for dinner I should fix......
I can eat whenever I need to eat. I better eat now because I might not get to later.
If you had more of the thin thinking thoughts, congratulations. Your thin thinking thoughts will go a long way in helping you achieve and maintain healthy body weight. If on the other hand, you noticed more of the fat thinking thoughts, here are some strategies that may help you to have more consistent thin thinking thoughts.

Strategies for Thin Thinking
  1. Before you eat anything, ask yourself if you are actually hungry. If so, eat something. If not, ask yourself what you really need instead. Listen for that quiet answer from you subconscious mind.
  2. Think about if you are hungry or actually just thirsty before you eat. Sometimes your body mistakes dehydration for hunger.
  3. Think about how good your food tastes while you are eating it. Be mindful and pay attention to your eating so you can get all the enjoyment out of each bite, feeling more satisfied when you are finished.
  4. Most restaurants serve huge portions, so order a half size or request a take home box to put half of your meal in before you even start eating it.
  5. Use positive self talk throughout the day reminding yourself that you are a naturally thin person and as such choose to eat and behave as a naturally thin person does.
  6. Use daily self-hypnosis for supporting your goals. (See April 2008 e-newsletter for an article on self-hypnosis.)
